the flower room*
Flowers for every occasion
Our Story
Based in the heart of the beautiful and historic village of Chaddesley Corbett, the flower room* is not your average florist but a place where special flowers with succulent colours and the sweetest scents are combined to celebrate all of life’s events with the kind of old-fashioned personal service that you may have thought had disappeared. We won’t duplicate designs and we don’t work to a bouquet menu. Instead, come in and watch your flowers be brought to life in front of you by Helen and her team – not just put together in a back room where you can’t see what’s going on.
Helen says “I just love every part of running my little business and hope my passion for flowers comes across in my work. My workbench is set up in the middle of the shop so I can chat with my customers as I work, refine exactly what they want.
In addition to flowers and plants we sell a small selection of gifts and cards for all occasions, floral accessories and vases, candles and Christmas decorations. Stock changes all the time so you can pop in and find something new. We pride ourselves in the freshness of our stock and are frequently told how long our flowers last once in your home. We always go the extra mile in whatever we do be it a simple birthday bouquet or a full-scale on-site installation.

Family run market garden.
Our family-run market garden is just half a mile away which ensures a constant supply of fresh, air-mile free English foliage such as eucalyptus, magnolia, olive, pittosporum and herbs – which we’ll have year round. From season to season there is also a supply of home and locally grown blooms such as alstromeria, delphinium, peony and dahlia.
Other flowers come in each week from the market in Aalsmeer in the Netherlands and I have regular suppliers who have proved their consistency and quality over the years, both Dutch specialist import-exporters and English nurseries and growers.
Our little slice of English village life
Picture perfect The Old Malthouse has had many past lives: from a house, a Youth Hostel in the 1950s and 60s, an antiques emporium, second hand dress shop and a shoe and gift shop. But for the last 17+ years it has been home to the flower room* and it works perfectly as a florist’s – cool in summer, cosy in winter; a quirky space with a constantly-changing window display which brings smiles to faces and kind comments each week. Come along and see for yourself.
A bit about me!
Flowers are really part of my DNA and I always dreamed of having a flower shop. As a child I was in the pram as my parents built the half acre greenhouse on our market garden around me, and it became my childhood playground. I used to dress up and sit on the lawn at my Granny’s doing ‘the pennies of honesty’ – removing one at a time the lovely circular seed pods from garden-grown Lunaria – or watch her and Mum do the flowers in church and for village events – they made it seem so effortless and elegant, and all I wanted was to be like them one day.
After school I got my degree – in physical geography – in London, then took on a career path: working in Environmental Education for local Government, then into Primary Teaching – all a very long way from flowers! All of the time I was dreaming of the little shop in Chaddesley, and when it became available in 2007 I was living back in the village raising 2 small children, and the rest is history. Little girls with vision grow up to be women with ambition.
Big loves
Special mention of husband Mark, Mum Rosabelle and Dad Mervyn who all still help with deliveries on busy days and by growing and cutting flowers and foliages for me every week and generally bringing my crazy ideas for props to life. Away from the shop I love my garden, walking our crazy Romanian rescue dog and travelling.
